Arizona Texting & Driving Ban Languishes in Legislature

Categories: Car Accidents

Throughout the U.S., many states have instituted widespread bans on texting and driving. These bans are intended to protect the public health and to stop drivers from engaging in one of the most dangerous behaviors behind the wheel. Unfortunately, Arizona is not one of the states with a texting and driving ban. Our Phoenix, AZ accident lawyers know that lawmakers have made numerous attempts to try to institute a texting and driving ban. These attempts have largely been unsuccessful. It now appears that the latest proposed ban will also be unsuccessful as well. Arizona Texting and Driving Ban Stalled On February 20, the AZ Capitol Times reported on SB 1218. SB 1218 was authored by a Tucson Democrat and was intended to impose a texting ban for all drivers. If …

Driver Attitudes About Driver Safety Don’t Add up to Action

Categories: Car Accidents

Car crashes are one of the leading causes of death in the United States, and the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety indicates that almost one-third of all Americans have either a friend or a relative who was in a car accident that caused serious injury or death. Yet, even though many people have first-hand personal experience with the consequences of auto accidents, there are a lot of drivers out there who knowingly and intentionally engage in driving behaviors that they are fully aware increase their chances of becoming involved in an accident. The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety has recently released the fifth annual Traffic Safety Culture Index, which summarizes attitudes about safe driving and interviews people on their actions when it comes to certain dangerous driving behaviors. Our …

Arizona Traffic Laws Lag Behind Most of U.S.

Categories: Car Accidents

Every year for the past ten years, the Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety have surveyed the driver safety laws on the books in all fifty states. The Advocates then release a report on what they’ve found. This year, the 13th Annual report was recently released, and Cronkite News reported that it contained some very bad news for Arizona.  Arizona is one of the most dangerous  in the nation when it comes to passing laws intended to make roads less risky. Along with just a few other states, Arizona has fallen “dangerously behind” in regulating the safety of drivers, and, as a result, everyone who drives within the state may be facing unnecessary risks. Our Phoenix, AZ accident lawyers believe that this is a situation that should be …

When you drive, it is important that you have your wits about you, that your reflexes are sharp and that you can focus on what is going on around you. Drowsy Driving a Major Issue For Phoenix Drivers

Categories: Car Accidents

On January 11, 2013, AZ Family reported that the FDA is requiring the makers of popular sleep medications to lower the dose in their products. Ambien, and other similar drugs, will now have a lower dose of medication because evidence suggests that taking these drugs leads to lingering morning drowsiness. This morning drowsiness can affect morning commutes and increase the risk of auto accidents.  The FDA’s new order occurs amid increasing fears about drowsy driving.  A recent study by the Centers for Disease Control, for example, has our Phoenix auto accident attorneys concerned. The study suggests that there are many fatigued drivers on the roads who are putting everyone in danger. The Centers for Disease Control and Drowsy Driving Drivers with a sleeping-pill hangover represent a major hazard on …

Texting and driving is undeniably a dangerous practice. Distraction.gov figures show that there is a 23 times greater chance for a texting driver to get into an accident than for a non-texting driver. Despite the clear dangers of texting while driving, Arizona is one of only a handful of states that allow texting while driving. After the new year, however, lawmakers likely will begin debating the merits of a texting while driving ban in Arizona. According to KTAR, a state Sen.-elect Steve Farley, D-Tucson, said he will reintroduce legislation in 2013 to ban texting behind the wheel. The House has repeatedly rejected such proposals. Our Phoenix injury attorneys urge Arizona lawmakers to pass the texting and driving bans so that drivers throughout the state will know that it …
